Art Writing

My art writing can be art historical or employ critical analysis and wordsmithing. I have an MA in Art History from the University of Oregon where I studied early 20th century and Contemporary art history. My thesis topic is entitled, "Modern Art Hits Stumptown: Sally H. Lewis and Vanguard Exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum, 1911-1924." (Copies of my thesis are available upon request, or at the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon Historical Society and at the Pittock Mansion).

I have experience writing about art for exhibition critical reviews, as stylistic analysis, and in describing the work of artists. I often work with artists to edit or refine their statements or other promotional material.

I have worked in the art gallery environment since 1994 where I have experience writing:

  • Artist essays for catalogues, including for artists Sherrie Wolf, Geoffrey Pagen, Sharon Bronzan, Jay Backstrand, and Mary Josephson

  • Promotional material for PR packets

  • Website blurbs

  • Grant proposals

  • Art Lectures

My writing experience includes working for:

  • The Rental Sales Gallery, Seattle, WA

  • The Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for the Graphics Arts, Portland Art Museum, OR

  • The Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Portland, OR

  • The Laura Russo Gallery, Portland, OR

  • The Margo Jacobsen Gallery, Portland, OR

  • Michael Parsons Fine Art Gallery, Portland, OR

I also taught art at Mount Hood Community College for 5 years where I wrote a full curricular schedule of materials. My experience includes professional development in multicultural diversity in the educational environment, as well as ELP PACE classes in education at Portland State University.

I have guest lectured on various art topics at Clark College, Vancouver, WA, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland, OR and Pittock Mansion, Portland, OR. Please contact me if you are interested in group lectures on local Portland Art history, either as a host or an attendee.
